When choosing a valve, it's essential to know the required pipe size for your application. Pipes are classified using two measurement systems: DN (diametre nominal) and NPS (nominal pipe size). DN denotes the pipe's inside diameter in millimeters (mm), while NPS uses inches (in.).
What is DN?
DN measurements adhere to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) metric standards for various piping systems like plumbing, natural gas, heating oil, and others. NPS, on the other hand, follows the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards and is used for measuring pipes, valves, pipe fittings, and other piping components. Note that "NPS" can be confused with "national pipe straight," which refers to the standard governing pipe thread structure and shape.
